Description:
SUNY Morrisville seeks a highly motivated, responsible individual to join its Equine Science Department as an Instructional Support Assistant. This is a full-time tenure track position.
The successful candidate will assist with the daily operations and student learning opportunities in our discipline diverse western training and breeding program. They will work as a team member to accomplish the program’s educational objectives.
EDUCATION
Minimum: Associates of Science/Associates of Applied Science Degree in Equine Science or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Western Horse Training and Breeding Management –
• Western Training Experience working with but not limited to: starting colts under saddle, training the western performance horse, ground handling and halter breaking.
o Guidance of students developing riding, colt starting and training skills
o Competitive experience a plus– Local, Regional, or National Awards
• Breeding Management Experience: Assisting in the reproductive management of mares and stallions.
• Assisting the managing overall health care, feeding, handling and maintenance of lesson horses, stallions, mares, foals, yearlings and client owned horses.
• Mentoring, assisting and providing oversite of student activities
o Barn duty and chores in coordination with faculty/staff. In the absence of students, ensure that the barn chores are completed – esp. during School Breaks & Holidays
o Providing leadership to program and students during summer internships
o Potential to be training & traveling with students to western discipline shows
• Experience marketing, preparing and selling horses – possible industry contacts
• Ability to work with fellow faculty to develop the Western Training and the Breeding Program along with other Equine programs on campus
o Record keeping - Computer skills – email, Word, Excel, Facebook, Networking
o Program Budgets – herd inventory, supplies, expenses, travel
o Assisting in daily maintenance of facilities as necessary.
o Ability to operate equipment a plus (Earning a CDL or has a CDL, operating tractor, skid steer, dragging arenas (experience with Kiser Drag), mowers, manure spreader).
o Earn a license for pesticide application on animals
• Campus outreach – recruiting – community involvement – 4-H, local industry groups/clubs, etc.
Requirements:
Associate's degree in equine science or related field is required. Bachelor's degree preferred. The successful candidate must have experience in starting colts under saddle, training of the western performance horse, mare care and foaling, stallion handling and processing semen. Experience training western performance horses, breeding, marketing, preparing and selling horses preferred. Must be able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor in occasional extreme weather conditions. Must also be willing to travel occasionally for events such as shows, sales, auctions and recruitment events.
